What exactly is copywriting?

 

Copywriting is the art of using words to sell. Thousands of times in your life you’ve gone down a copywriter’s funnel without realizing it.

 

First you “randomly” discover a new product. (Nothing is random. Everything is targeted advertisements.) 


Then you “didn’t know I needed this in my life”. (Ever buy a new phone when your old phone was working just fine?) 


And then you whip out your card and buy it. 


You have done this thousands of times. Without even realizing it.


You are ALWAYS being sold something or the other. 


From the red colors at McDonald’s inviting you to eat, to the new iPhone ad you saw on the highway, to an online fitness coach showing you how you can lose fat without eating broccoli.


You’re witnessed the work of copywriters. (Ok the fitness coach might not know copywriting but that’s what he’s trying to do. He’s trying to SELL WITH WORDS i.e. copywriting.)


Copywriting is selling at scale. 

You sell to many people at once instead of selling 1 to 1. 

 

It could be via emails, videos, posters, wherever.


Copywriting is behind the email that makes you click “buy now.”


It’s behind the red color and yellow colors used at all fast food joints to signal hunger to your brain.


It’s behind every single ad you see anywhere, the phone you bought for the camera, and even the sunglasses and clothes you bought for a party.


Funnels, landing pages, designs, emails, content, and videos… are all expressions of copywriting.


When you master this skill:

 

  • You will make more money than you ever thought was possible. I live in India and I make more than most 60 year old CXOs.

  • You can work from anywhere with an internet connection. I work from my home, cafes, and wherever else I feel like.

  • You control your schedule completely. I have no boss or managers to report to. If I want to take a day off, I take it. 

  • You get paid based on results, not hours worked. I never have to sit late in an office just to give an employer the impression that I’m working hard.
