The Director of Marketing is a visionary leader responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive, multi-year marketing strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives and revenue goals. This role requires a proven ability to lead a diverse team, manage budgets, and serve as a key stakeholder and collaborator with executive leadership and other department heads (e.g., Sales, Product, HQ marketing team).
The role involves the following key responsibilities: Collecting and analyzing market dynamics in the U.S.; Strategizing and prioritizing key business segments/categories and their growth drivers; Leading marketing team members to create segment/category-specific marketing tactics, including managing the product portfolio and brand promotion.
The Director of Marketing reports on U.S. marketing operations to the General Manager of Marketing, who oversees and harmonizes both global and local marketing strategy. The Director of Marketing will also be responsible for building and growing the newly established U.S. marketing team, which will include several marketing portfolio managers who manage specific business portfolios (e.g., Food Service or Retail, Mainstream or Asian), as well as expert marketing talent such as insight researchers, designers, and brand promoters.
Essential Job Functions
- Strategic Planning: Develop and own the overarching marketing strategy for the organization, encompassing brand, product, and growth marketing. This includes long-term planning, defining key performance indicators (KPIs), and creating the roadmap for the entire marketing department.
- Organizational Leadership: Lead, mentor, and build a high-performing marketing team, which may include other directors, managers, and individual contributors. The Director is responsible for the professional development, performance, and overall structure of the marketing organization.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as a key liaison between marketing and other departments. The Director is responsible for ensuring marketing initiatives are deeply integrated with sales goals, product launches, and business development efforts. They are often a member of the company’s leadership team.
- Brand and Market Stewardship: Act as the primary steward of the company’s brand, ensuring consistency and integrity across all channels. This role involves deep market and competitor analysis to identify new opportunities, anticipate industry trends, and maintain a strong market position.
- Budget and Resource Management: Own and manage a significant marketing budget, making strategic decisions on resource allocation, technology investments, and vendor relationships to maximize return on investment (ROI).
- Performance and Reporting: Define and track a sophisticated set of KPIs. The Director is responsible for reporting on marketing performance and its direct impact on revenue and
- business growth to the executive team and the parent company in Japan.
- Public Representation: May act as a company spokesperson or brand ambassador at major industry events, conferences, and with the media.
- Innovation and Vision: Stay at the forefront of marketing technology and trends (e.g., AI, automation, data analytics) to drive innovation and maintain a competitive edge.
- External Relationships: Manage relationships with external agencies, vendors, and partners (e.g., advertising agencies, PR firms).
Experience/ Training/ Education
- 8 to 10 years of progressive experience in marketing, with a demonstrable track record of successfully developing and executing impactful marketing strategies and campaigns.
- 5 years of proven experience in a leadership or senior-level role, managing complex projects, and potentially mentoring team members.
- Extensive experience across a broad range of marketing channels, with deep expertise in digital marketing, content strategy, and performance analytics.
- Experience in the food industry is highly desirable.
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field.
- MBA in marketing is highly preferred

If not fully experienced in all areas, a strong grasp of the workflow is required to effectively manage the process within the team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and product development software.
Working Conditions
Work in a comfortable office environment. Occasional extended hours to meet deadlines. Marketing projects may require on-call availability, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays. Managers may be required to travel domestically or internationally for business purposes, such as attending parent-company meetings, visiting branch offices, or manufacturing sites.
