Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
- Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
- Five (5) years of full-time experience in communications, marketing, media, advertising, public relations, or related fields.
- Management and/or supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in developing and executing social media plans.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite applications (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
- Proficiency with content management systems (OmniUpdate, WordPress, Blackbaud Net Community).
Brief Description of Duties:
The Director of Marketing and Communications is a multi-functional role that spans two key areas: creative and leadership. The Director will ideate, lead, and refine marketing and communications strategies to maximize impact. With a strong commitment to leadership and mentorship, the incumbent will lead a team to develop and implement integrated marketing and communications plans, ensuring alignment with the university’s core values, mission, and strategic priorities, while maintaining Advancement’s brand identity and fostering collaboration and consistency across all departments. This role will collaborate with Advancement stakeholders to add content about philanthropic beneficiaries, Stony Brook University’s donor impact, and to encourage community engagement. The team will develop themes, messages, and materials to advance the department’s priorities and initiatives.
Responsibilities:
Creative Responsibilities:
- Support strategic Advancement goals by developing and leading integrated marketing and communication strategies across multiple channels, including social media, video, campaigns, and special projects.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure all communications enhance brand recognition and align with target audiences, maintaining consistency with brand strategy, messaging, and design.
- Utilize analytics to drive content decisions, measure the success of marketing initiatives, and inform strategic, data-driven decision making.
Leadership Responsibilities:
- Develop best practices by assessing current resources, identifying needs, and recommending changes.
- Supervise the MarCom team, fostering innovation, collaboration, and transparency while providing guidance and support for professional development.
- Identify growth opportunities across all media channels, integrating and leveraging personalization and Artificial Intelligence to maximize audience reach, enhance user experiences, and drive growth.
Operational Responsibilities:
- Ensure project scope is defined properly and deliverables are met on time, even in tight deadline situations.
- Source, hire, and manage freelance vendors, ensuring the delivery of high-quality materials.
- Collaborate with all Advancement departments to ensure marketing and communications strategies align with program plans and goals set by fundraising and constituent experience directors.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation’s policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines, and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
